Report Says US Reviewing Residency Status of Analyst Trita Parsi
According to reports, the US State Department has opened an inquiry into Parsi that could ultimately result in deportation proceedings. Parsi, 51, was born in Iran, grew up in Sweden, and has lived in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for more than two decades.
He is known as a co-founder of the Washington-based Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, a policy research organization focused on foreign affairs.
Discussing efforts to address what officials describe as Iranian influence within the United States, an administration representative was quoted as saying: “The secretary has been very clear.”
The official further stated: “Anyone who seeks to undermine the US, we’re taking a hard look at,” and suggested that scrutiny could extend to individuals who “support adversaries of ours and whose work furthers their agenda and undermines our security.”
Reports indicate that US authorities have initiated deportation actions against several green card holders whom officials believe have expressed support for, or sympathy toward, Iran.
According to reports, Parsi and those working with him regard the investigation as a potentially serious threat.
Earlier this year, Quincy Institute Chief Executive Officer Lora Lumpe reportedly informed staff members and donors that the organization's chairman had agreed to provide funding for legal preparations should authorities pursue efforts to remove Parsi from the country.
A memo cited in reports said the institute had also begun seeking legal assistance from an immigration attorney, who had “advised that we immediately prepare a writ of habeas corpus to have at the ready” in case Parsi were unexpectedly detained by immigration officials.
